Chapter 12

The scent of freshly baked sugar cookies drifted through the air, mingling with the warm glow from the fireplace. I remembered my dad had put up the tree so I turned on the lights. Now it was a cozy Christmas Eve, and the twinkling of the Christmas tree’s multi-colored lights reflected off the cabin walls.

I couldn’t help but feel a sense of comfort. Even though there was our earlier failure to find the money in the barn. We dug for four hours and didn’t turn up anything. I could tell Jason was getting discouraged.

I glanced over at him sitting across from me, his deep blue eyes reflecting the firelight. He met my gaze, and for a moment, we held each other’s stare, silently acknowledging the tension that hung in the air between us.

“Here,” he said, handing me a plate of cookies from the end table. He sat them there to cool off. I wanted them right away, but he refused to let me burn my tongue. Our fingers brushed against one another as I accepted the plate of sugar cookies shaped like Christmas trees. Our skin-to-skin contact sent an electric jolt down my spine.

“You deserve something sweet and sugary.”

“Thank you.” I replied, trying to keep my tone steady.

“You were a digging machine earlier.”

“No, I think you’re confusing you with me.”

As I took a bite, I couldn’t help but notice how the heat from the fireplace seemed to be heating my body completely. I could feel the warmth in my toes.

Jason shifted closer, his knee brushing against mine. My breath hitched at the contact, and I could feel my pulse speeding up. I knew I should pull away, retreat to the safe distance I had been maintaining since we first met. But something in his eyes held me captive, drawing me in like a moth to a flame.

“Are you okay?” He asked quietly, concern lacing his voice. His hand hovered above mine as if wanting to offer comfort, but unsure if it would be welcomed.

“I’m fine,” I lied, attempting a reassuring smile. And yet, I didn’t move my hand, leaving it there, vulnerable and exposed.

For a moment, I saw him hesitate, as though battling some internal struggle. Then, with a decisive sigh, he reached out and gently took my hand, his fingers intertwining with mine.

The simple touch sent another wave of warmth through me. I looked over at him, my eyes locking onto his, and for the first time since our paths had crossed, I allowed myself to lust after him. It was on my mind. He’d never know but letting myself go there and stay there felt freeing.

My heart pounded in my chest as I watched Jason lick his lips. He had very nice lips and tasting them entered my mind. I never saw him groom himself, but his body always smelled clean. Jason’s breath was always fresh. His hair was always combed. His clothes were clean, and I knew that was because of the washer and dryer in the basement.
